Biodegradable polymers: Advances and environmental applicationsa

Author(s): Rajesh Bhagwat Jadhao and Mohd Yusuf

Abstract: Growing awareness of plastic pollution and the need for sustainable materials have accelerated the development of biodegradable polymers. These materials can degrade into harmless end-products under natural environmental conditions, providing eco-friendly alternatives to conventional plastics. This review presents an extensive discussion on biodegradable polymers, focusing on their chemistry, degradation mechanisms, and environmental applications up to 2019. Recent developments in polymer synthesis, nanocomposites, and life-cycle assessments are analyzed. Special attention is given to environmental benefits, market growth, and sustainability aspects. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives for industrial adoption are outlined.
