Fabrication of novel potentiometric sensor for highly selective determination of cobalt (II)

Author(s): Narendra Kumar and Neeraj Sharma

Abstract: A cobalt (II) ion-selective membrane electrode was developed using a poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) matrix incorporating a newly synthesized Schiff base, 5-methyl-3-((5-bromosalicylidene) amino) pyrazole, as a neutral ionophore. Among the membrane formulations studied, the composition ionophore: NaTPB: PVC: NPOE= 2: 1.5: 65: 115 (mg) exhibited the most favourable analytical performance. The optimized sensor displayed a near-Nernstian response towards Co²⁺ ions across a broad concentration range, with a detection limit of 3.5 × 10⁻⁸ mol L⁻¹. The electrode demonstrated a rapid response time (< 20 s) and maintained stable potentiometric behaviour for approximately three months without significant drift in its characteristics. The proposed sensor exhibited excellent selectivity for Co²⁺ over a variety of potentially interfering ions. Reliable potentiometric performance was observed within the pH range 2.5-6.0, and the electrode tolerated up to 20% (v/v) of non-aqueous solvents in the measurement medium.
